There is a great deal of similarity between India and Mauritius due to the cultural and religious connections that have only gained momentum since India gained independence, as furthered by the political endeavors and bilateral relations. They are close friends and it works for both countries. On 11 February 2025, the Indian Prime Minister, Modi, arrived at the Mauritanian capital of Port Louis where he was given a ceremonial welcome. It was the Mauritius Prime Minister, Navin Ramgoolam, who received him at the airport, showing the close relationship between the two countries. The Indian community members arrived at the airport to catch a glimpse of their Indian leader. The Prime Minister departed Mauritius from the Indian capital on Monday night, starting a two-day official visit. On March 12, he was the chief guest at the Mauritius National Day celebrations. The Ministry of External Affairs highlighted the importance of the visit to further India-Mauritius ties. Modi received the Grand Commander of the Order of the Star and Key, the highest civilian honour of the Indian Ocean, island nation.
PM Modi said that Mauritius is a bridge between India and the Global South. Even in the home space of India, it's not just a partner country. Newly-elected Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam and President Dharam Gokhool on March 11 at a high-level meeting during the 2-day visit to the island nation by Prime Minister Modi.The engagement with the new leadership is important in the context of the Indian government’s involvement in the infrastructure-development in Mauritius under the governments led by Anerood Jugnauth and Pravind Jugnauth. Delhi is now trying to reach out to the new regime led by Ramgoolam.
Since independence in 1968, Mauritius has been ruled by the Ramgoolams and the Jugnauths. Modi, speaking during the Indian diaspora event in Port Louis attended by Ramgoolam, highlighted India as testimonials "trusted ally in combating illegal fishing, piracy and maritime crimes." India is acting in the best interests of Mauritius and ensuring the Indian Ocean region's safety as a trusted friend. It said Mauritius is not a partner country but for us, Mauritius is a family. "This bond is strong and deep-rooted in history, heritage, and that human spirit," he added. We're looking forward to making business easy, fewer bureaucracies, less red tape. Ramgoolam announced the conferment of his country's highest civilian award, the Grand Commander of the Order of the Star and Key of Indian Ocean, on Modi. He will be the first Indian and only the fifth person in the world to receive this honor. That is why he conferred the award on him in recognition of his work in deepening the relations binding India and Mauritius together. While meeting with president Gokhool, the two leaders appreciated how to deepen the special and close bilateral ties." On Wednesday, India and Mauritius elevated their ties to an enhanced strategic partnership and signed eight pacts in the areas of trade and maritime security, even as PM Modi unveiled an elaborate vision for development in the Global South.
The agreement signed would facilitate the use of national currencies in cross-border transactions, exchange of maritime data, joint work to combat money laundering, and boost cooperation in MSMEs. PM Modi winded off his Mauritius visit and brought some cherished memories home with him.
