Wahab Khar: Famous Sufi Poet and Saint

Wahab Khar a celebrated Sufi poet of the Kashmir of yester years needs no introduction as people are aware of his poetic and Sufi genius. His name stands tall among a large number of the Sufi poets. He occupies a special position and place in the cherished tradition of Sufi poets. Wahab Khar is the 19th century Sufi poet and it was the time of many political ,social and cultural upheavals in Kashmir. Despite these changes mystic Sufi poets and their life and teachings had much impact on the then society and these poets continued to give direction to the people in those good olden days.

Wahab Khar took birth in a modest family and he was simple, humble and devoted his life in the search of truth and God. Just like other Sufi poets his life too cannot be separated from his poetry as his poetry contained his journey in search of truth and ultimate reality as well as truth. His poetry clearly showed his inner urge and devotion towards self-realisation and towards godhood. He never did seek fame and name, rather he was always busy in search of truth and his poetry in fact was a natural expression of his mystic life and its intricacies.

To the common people he was a mystic poet only but a Faqir, a spiritual master who would touch their hearts by his simple but meaningful verses. His poetry is the blend of kashmiris' beauty and spiritual depth of sufi thought and tradition.Unlike difficult style, his poetry consisted of simple and straightforward language in order common people could comprehend it and be benefitted by it and his simple and saintly life. His verses were so simple and touching that common men were able not only to understand but also to sing it with ease. This simplicity of his poetry led to its spread in the villages far and wide as many villagers and farmers would sing it during gatherings even today. His verses are remembered with great reverence. Also his poetry was not just entertainment but a way of meditation and a reminder of the higher purpose of life and of seeing God within. He always emphasized that the true meaning of life is not rushing for getting material things but or social position but is the purity of heart and continuous remembrance of God. The summum bonum of his poetry is the pursuit of God, transitory nature of the life and world, besides humility and longing for union with God. He often impressed the people that his life is temporary, deceptive, illusion and one should not get himself or herself trapped in the delusion of life. His verses are full of fleeting shadows, changing seasons and weak human experience. Despite this his poetry was never pessimistic and negative but full of hope and it exhibited that God’s mercy is for all those who sincerely seek it and make concerted efforts towards self-realisation. He emphasized the idea of divine love as the highest form of truth and an everlasting bond between the people and God.

Like many other Sufi poets across the globe, he expressed the union of lover and beloved to show the intimacy between human and God. He also used the metaphor of lover and beloved to show the love between the man and God. This made his poetry timeless. Wahab Khar’s works were easily accessible to people and it made him and his poetry and mystic traditions popular among the people. In this lies the importance of his poetry. He belonged to ordinary people and was not an elite literate and spoke in common language which people could comprehend easily. His songs were full of rustic rhythm of Kashmiri folk tradition and due to it they were understood by the ordinary Kashmiri’s and became very popular. The ordinary people like farmers in their fields, weavers at the loom and boatmen in rivers could sing his poetry doing their work. The commen men where finding truth and solace in his songs. For a large number of people,Wahab Khar was not only a poet but a saint who would help them to realise the divine and come closer to God. His life was simple and free from attachment and he preached  what he experienced his life. He preached what he practised and in this was his greatness being a sufi poet and saint of immense. 

He lived close to nature wandering through villages and valleys singing his poetry which was and is full of mysticism. His personality and his art were not separate but inseparable and it bestowed his poetry spiritual authority that deeply influenced his contemporaries. In the Sofi poetry Wahab Khar stood besides, the great Sufi poets like Lad Ded, Nund Rishi, Shamas Faqir and Soch Kral. All these giant sufi poets contributed to the spiritual literature in Kashmir but Wahab Khar stands tall as his poetry in folk appeal which makes his poetry unique. Wahab Khar did not belong to certain order and tradition but spoke common language in simple words which make him very popular and he belonged to people and spoke their heart. 

His verses are drawn from everyday life but yet rise to the level of mystical universality. There is the blend of simplicity and depth in his poetry which made him and his poetry very popular and made him beloved of all classes of people. Even in the present day one can hear his poetry in village gatherings, shrines and cultural programmes and it shows its popularity and living power of his words. In short what makes him popular is his simple life and deep poetry in simple language and full of mystic themes.
