Reviving Kashmir’s Artistic Heritage
The cultural history of Kashmir is enriched by personalities whose extraordinary creativity, artistic vision and intellectual accomplishments have left an enduring imprint on successive generations. Pran Kishore Kaul, popularly known as Pran Ji, occupies a distinguished position among such multifaceted personalities. An accomplished broadcaster, theatre director, actor, filmmaker, playwright, novelist, translator and painter, he made remarkable contributions to the development of Kashmiri radio drama and brought the cultural richness of Kashmir to audiences across India and beyond. His life represents a fascinating journey through the evolution of broadcasting, theatre, literature and performing arts in Jammu and Kashmir.
Born in 1925 at Mallapora, Habba Kadal, Srinagar, Pran Kishore Kaul grew up in an era when Kashmir was undergoing considerable social and cultural transformation. His childhood memories provide glimpses of an older Srinagar, where traditional schools, modest lifestyles, limited facilities and close-knit neighbourhoods characterised everyday existence. He also witnessed the arrival of electricity, piped drinking water and the first aircraft flying over the Kashmir Valley. These experiences became an invaluable part of his understanding of Kashmiri society and its changing cultural landscape. His association with theatre began during his student days. In 1943, he participated in a stage production titled Neelam at Sri Pratap College, Srinagar. During this production, Professor Raja Mohammad Maqbool suggested that he adopt the name Pran Kishore instead of Pran Nath Koul. The name remained with him throughout his distinguished artistic career. His early exposure to theatre gradually developed into a lifelong passion for dramatic expression and creative communication.
One of the most significant chapters of his professional life began in 1948, when he joined Radio Kashmir, Srinagar, shortly after its establishment. At a time when radio was the principal medium of mass communication and entertainment, Pran Kishore recognised its immense potential for literary expression and cultural preservation. Through his imaginative approach to production, direction, acting and sound design, he helped transform Kashmiri radio drama into an influential artistic medium. For countless households in Kashmir, the evening radio drama became an eagerly awaited family tradition. Listeners would assemble around their radio sets to enjoy popular productions such as Lala Joo and Sons, written by Ali Mohammad Lone. Other memorable productions included Vyaathh Rooz Pakaan, Vaitaal Pacheesi, Bombur Ta Yemberzal, Dr Faustus, Vitasta, Aadam Chhu Ajab Zaat and Yeli Vattan Chhu Khuur Iwaan. These productions brought together some of Kashmir's finest writers, actors and performers, creating an exceptional tradition of radio entertainment. Pran Kishore's contribution extended far beyond directing individual programmes. He encouraged literary experimentation, introduced innovative production techniques and maintained exceptionally high professional standards during rehearsals and recordings. His understanding of sound effects, voice modulation, dialogue delivery and dramatic presentation enabled listeners to visualise situations that existed only through sound. He believed that radio possessed the extraordinary ability to create an imaginary world through carefully designed auditory experiences.
His command over Kashmiri, Urdu, Hindi and English enabled him to translate and adapt important literary and dramatic works for Kashmiri audiences. He also worked with several prominent writers and playwrights, including Akhtar Mohi-ud-Din, Ali Mohammad Lone, Dina Nath Nadim, Hari Krishen Kaul, Bansi Nirdosh and Som Nath Zutshi. Many productions associated with him received recognition at national radio drama festivals. He also initiated the annual Jashn-e-Tamseel, providing an important platform for dramatic talent. Among his outstanding contributions were radio features on the celebrated Kashmiri mystic poetess Lal Ded and the revered Reshi saint Nund Rishi. These productions reflected his deep interest in Kashmir's spiritual traditions, literary heritage and historical consciousness. His radio feature Aab Ta Hayaat (Water and Life), which was presented before an international audience in Milan, Italy, further demonstrated his ability to communicate meaningful subjects through the medium of broadcasting.
His creative achievements were equally remarkable in theatre and cinema. He directed the stage adaptation of Dina Nath Nadim's celebrated opera Bombur Ta Yemberzal, which was presented before an important Russian delegation visiting Srinagar in December 1955. He also directed the stage adaptation of Vitasta, another significant operatic work by Nadim. His involvement in the Kashmiri feature film Maenzraat demonstrated his versatility as a filmmaker and director. The film received the Silver Peacock recognition. Pran Kishore Kaul also established himself as an accomplished writer. His Kashmiri novel Sheen Ta Vatta Podh, dealing with the lives, customs and traditions of the Gujjar and Bakerwal communities, received the Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture and Languages Award and the prestigious Sahitya Akademi Award. His ability to portray the social realities of communities different from his own reflected his remarkable powers of observation and literary sensitivity. Among his other important literary works are Gul Gulshan Gulfaam, The Zoon of the Saffron Fields, Radio Kashmir and My Days in Broadcasting and Sheen: Snow and the Bridle Path.
His association with television brought him wider national recognition. The immensely popular television serial Gul Gulshan Gulfam, based on his literary work, introduced audiences across India to the everyday life, cultural traditions and distinctive social character of Kashmir. His other television assignments included Saaye Devdaar Ke and Junoon. Through his production venture, Pragaash Productions, he also promoted Kashmiri music, dance and performing arts through cultural programmes presented at different places, including Hong Kong. Another lesser-known dimension of his personality is his talent for painting. Painting remained one of his earliest artistic passions, and his association with eminent Kashmiri painter Ghulam Rasool Santosh further enriched his artistic interests. His paintings have been exhibited at national and international platforms, including exhibitions associated with the Lalit Kala Akademi. His artistic curiosity also extended to music, poetry, dance and culinary traditions.
The Government of India honoured Pran Kishore Kaul with the Padma Shri in 2018 for his outstanding contribution to art and culture. He had previously received several distinctions, including the Jammu and Kashmir Government's highest state award for his contribution to literature and the arts. Pran Kishore Kaul's significance, however, cannot be measured merely through awards and distinctions. His greatest achievement lies in the generations of writers, actors, broadcasters and cultural practitioners whom he inspired, trained and encouraged. He helped establish a professional tradition in Kashmiri broadcasting and demonstrated how regional languages and indigenous cultural expressions could find a respected place in the national cultural landscape. Today, Pran Kishore Kaul remains an extraordinary symbol of Kashmir's creative heritage. His contributions to radio drama, theatre, television, cinema, literature and painting constitute an important chapter in the cultural history of the region. He is not simply a distinguished broadcaster or an accomplished writer; he represents an entire institution of artistic excellence. His life and work remind us that genuine creativity transcends professional boundaries and becomes an enduring legacy for society. Pran Kishore Kaul will continue to be remembered as one of the foremost architects of modern Kashmiri broadcasting and a true ambassador of Kashmir's composite cultural heritage.
