Pogal Paristan: The Land of Fairies

Image
Pogal Paristan, Ramban:  Pogal Paristan is situated on the magnificent mountains of Pir Panjal of Ramban District of Jammu and Kashmir.  Pogal Paristan is one of the lesser-explored destinations that beautifully represents the natural splendour and cultural richness of the Chenab Valley. Blessed with expansive green meadows, dense forests, flowing streams, picturesque mountain landscapes and a distinctive indigenous culture, this enchanting region possesses immense potential to emerge as an important destination for nature lovers, cultural enthusiasts and adventure seekers. Despite its extraordinary geographical beauty, Pogal Paristan has remained relatively unfamiliar to tourists outside the region, preserving much of its traditional character, simplicity and connection with nature. Pogal Paristan became a separate tehsil in 2014 after being carved out of the erstwhile Banihal tehsil. Located approximately 35 kilometres from Ramban town and 23 kilometres from Banihal, the reg...

Tilakacharya: The Buddhist Scholar and Adviser in Sultan Zain-ul-Abidin’s Court

Image
Tilakacharya: A Buddhist Adviser to Budshah Tilakacharya holds a distinctive, though sparsely recorded, place in the historical narrative of the Kashmir Sultanate. Early accounts describe him as a Bauddha Acharya, or a Parmukh, who rose to become an influential adviser to Sultan Ghiyas-ud-Din Zain-ul-Abidin, the illustrious ruler of Kashmir from 1420 to 1470, affectionately revered by his people as Budshah, meaning the Great King. The Buddhist Parmukhs of Central Asia To comprehend the reasons behind the appointment of Buddhist Parmukhs by certain Muslim sovereigns, it is essential to examine the historical connections with Central Asia. Derived from the Sanskrit term Pramukha, signifying a leader or chief, the designation Parmukh was associated with the hereditary custodians of the renowned Nava Vihara monastery at Balkh, several of whom traced their origins to Kashmir. These distinguished intellectuals possessed exceptional linguistic abilities, mastering Sanskrit, Bactrian, Tibetan,...
