The Shrine of Sultan Sahib (Sultan Darvesh) at Hakura Badasgam, Anantnag

A 20th century Sufi known as Sheikh Muhammad Sultan used to live in a small village in Anantnag, the Kashmir valley called Hakura Badasgam. He has achieved miraculous status throughout the Kashmir area as well as outside of it as one of its prophets. Baba Sultan is classified as a Qalandar (one of 4 categories of Sufis). The Qalandars lived their lives wholly devoted to God by following Him alone and not following social customs (that is, the accepted rules of society) as a matter of course, except where doing so might violate the Shari'ah (that is, the universal law of God). (The differences in behaviour, dress, and objects carried by Qalandars has been used as an excuse to consider Qalandars to be separate from others.) A tribute to Gazal Maestro Shyam Talib

         


                             

Shyam Talib was a contemporary literary figure. He was an Urdu poet and was popular in the literary community in Jammu. He was the founder president of a cultural organization called Adbi Kunj and he nourished this literary organization with his blood, sweat and tears and continued to serve it most of his life. While an Urdu poet and writer principally, he had similar respect for other languages and specifically, Shyam Talib had a feeling of reverence and love for the language of Dogri and Kashmiri languages. In Adbi Kunj as a literary organization weekly Mushara's were organized in all the languages of Jammu and Kashmir and Shyam Talib was always at the head of this literary organization right up to his death, which indeed was his child.

Shyam Talib had a teaching career and was a public servant teacher and regarded his profession as noble and divine. He was a true teacher potential and he discharged his duties as a teacher honestly. Shyam Talib lived in Susheel Nager Camp Road Talab Tillo. He was founder  president of Adbi Kunj literary organisation. Shyam Talib had a great and tremendous contribution in respect of literature ,he will be remembered for his endeavours to promote and cultivate regional and national languages. It is Shyam Talib who sought play as dominant and pivotal role in fostering and enhancing literature and establishing a base to promote literature for enhancing linguistic and creative diversity. His effort with regard to promoting regional and national languages is second to none. In his life the legendary poet in a way indirectly performed hybrid and geo strategic function of promoting cultural and linguistic unity through cultural expression. His character is very humanistic and was secular and cooperative in approach and always offered assistance. 

He was a true champion of the literary arts and was a well-known poet of Urdu ,Hindi ,Punjabi and Dogri languages and respected all the languages and devoted his life in promoting literature and supporting budding writers and poets till he breathed his last. His simple life, high thinking and his role in promoting and enriching regional and national languages will not be forgotten. He was a very down to earth man and lived life very simply and never pretentiously shown the qualities of poet and writer and the three qualities of head and heart. One would always recall the times when this creative giant would travel by foot to Shastri Memorial School Building Talab Tillo, Cultural Academy Abinov Theater, Jammu university for organizing Musharias in Urdu ,Hindi , Punjabi ,Dogri and Kashmiri languages. He groomed and encouraged budding poets and writers from various Languages and throughout his life promoted languages and literature he was associated with. He was truly a devotee of the literary arts, and he was a wonderful poet in the Urdu, Hindi, Punjabi and Dogri Languages, he had great respect for all languages, and lived for literature and for new writers and poets until the end of his life.

His simple life, high thinking and his role in promoting and enriching regional and national languages can't easily forgotten. Shyam Talib was a great Urdu poet and writer and was very good at Hindi, Punjabi and Dogri language and was intoxicated and ecstatic while composing poetry and prose writings. He was a simple and down-to-earth man and practiced life very simply and never pretentiously displayed the quality of poet and writer and the three qualities of head and heart. One would recall the time when this creative great would walk to Shastri Memorial School Building Talab Tillo, Cultural Academy Abinov Theater, jammu university organizing Musharias in Urdu, Hindi, Punjabi, Dogri and Kashmiri languages. He gave grooming to budding poets and writers from different Languages and throughout his life promoted languages and literature he was associated.

His death is a big loss to the literary world and will be difficult to fill. Shyam Talib's life and identity as a legendary poet and writer as well as his quality of simple living and high thinking will encourage the poets and writers for many years. Shyam Talib received grand tributes in the literary meetings and especially in the condolence meeting organized by Adbi Kunj Jammu and Kashmir where his contribution as a great poet, writer, and an honest and simple man was recalled and the young poets and writers were encouraged to emulate the literary and humane qualities of Shyam Talib. May God give this legend man the abode of heaven, grant peace to his soul, and courage to his family to bear this intellectual and emotional loss. Finally, Shyam Talib is to be remembered for his love and contribution for languages and literature for decades.
