Celebrating International Yoga Day

Every year, the International Day of Yoga is celebrated every year on 21 June. Excitement is especially high as the world prepares to celebrate Yoga Day, 21 June 2025, with much pomp and fun with Prime Minister Narendra Modi leading India to celebrate Yoga Day and lead the celebrations outside India at the United Nations headquarters in New York. The Prime Minister is on a five day tour of USA and Egypt, and 21 June will mark a new historical festival because it will be a day of yoga. In December 2014, all 139 countries unanimously approved the 21st of June to be the International Day of Yoga. The occasion is also referred to as the World Yoga day and this is also celebrated every year on the 21 June.

The significance of Yoga for the development of a healthier, happier, contented, and balanced personality cannot be overstated. We are seeing that every corner of the world is having a lot of interest with the practice Yoga for meaningful and healthy living. The day that we are celebrating is to draw attention on the importance and effect of Yoga in the Health of the people. As a lead into yoga day PM Modi took the initiative through his Mann Ki Baat - My Life My Yoga - he wanted to bring awareness to the need to encourage people to keep moving and keep fit. And we know change is taking place in our environment and we all know the world has turned into a competitive environment.

Yoga has long been known by the ancient sages and wise men of India as one of the best methods of unifying the body and mind. Yoga is an exercise performed through a diet, a breath and a posture to normalise the mind and body. In fact, the United Nations assembly held on December 11, 2014 had recognised yoga for the first time as a time - honoured, proven, universal, form of holistic healing. The General Assembly officially recognised a day of universal yoga one day in June 21 - since then, people throughout the world have been interested and supportive of yoga and actively pursue yoga for a happier, fuller and healthy life. "People of earth are performing yoga to be far away from the ailments of life physically and mentally and this became a daily diet for them to practice yoga." Since yoga has a lot of beneficial advantages people have gravitated to and prefer themselves in yoga as a refuge from the ills of modern life.

The proclamation of this history dates back to 2001, when the Portuguese Yoga Federation and the Samkhya Yoga Institute acknowledged and accepted the concept of the "Yoga Day" proposal.. For the first time in recorded history the yoga Gurus of the world finally agreed that there should be an International Yoga Day. Narendra Modi at the UN General Assembly stated, "Yoga is an invaluable gift of the ancient Indian tradition and offers a holistic approach to health and well-being". Yoga has the idea of harmony between man and nature and is a holistic approach to health and well-being, not just movement, it is finding that zone of unity with yourself, the world and nature. Yoga can also be part of the solution to climate change issues and offers us an opportunity to work for the initiation of the International Day of Yoga.

Yoga practice and breathing practices, are extending the life span of the humans, people's in taking to the yogic exercises for fitness and a long life. I want to indicate that the value of yoga is immense, the resolution of India was adopted by 177 of the 193 UN member countries without a vote, it shows that it had importance to UNGA. There were also 175 co-sponsors, that is the largest number of co-sponsors for a resolution in history at UNGA.

The June 21 day is known for Sadgurus. It is also a day of the summer solstice. At the June solstice, the north pole is tilted towards the sun, or we could say the sun starts to go south. From a yoga perspective, this is a better transitional period for meditation. There is no question that yoga helps promote healing for diseases that create health complications all over this planet. Yoga connects people together, gets people enriching their lives with a meditation practice and provides great stress relief. Yoga combines health protection with sustainable health development as well. This is one of the reasons we keep practicing yoga as a regular part of our lives. The theme of the International Day of Yoga 2023 is yoga for humanity. It is a rewarding to know that people around this world are now recognizing there is so much importance to yoga and many people are doing yoga for more positive mental health and physical health.

People are becoming cognizant of the advantages and relevance of Yoga and are integrating yoga as a routine part of their life. In India educational institutions are offering yoga instruction to the students. In addition to that in government institutions and private organization yoga is being practiced as indispensable practice for a better quality of life, happiness, satisfaction, balance and plenty. Many people when switching to yoga are attempting to liberate themselves from the dangers of the life style diseases, it is a fascinating fact that couples of people now take yoga as part of their habit and indeed many people feel some thing emptiness in their life if they do not practice yoga regularly. Let us include yoga in our life as it is the best way to honour the world yoga day.
