We are living in a digital age and this era of digitization has touched almost every spheres of life. The integration of digitization into our daily lives can be seen in modern times and things that seems to be far from reality become a reality now. People are always busy and engrossed with mobiles by scrolling and watching short videos, youtube reels, facebook reels, Instagram reels etc. The reel and scrolling culture have become an indispensable part of human lives and thus it is to be seen that be it kids, youths or adults, all utilize their precious time on mobiles by scrolling reels of 30 seconds. Reel Obsession is a very disturbing issue and the young generation is falling under the prey of it. It is an addiction that is affecting the young minds because the childrens are using too much mobiles these days and spend countless hours on watching unnecessary Instagram reels. Some reels are unproductive and violent, such short videos are badly affecting the child's mind and they become aggressive at homes. However, due to lack of physical activity, the childrens are facing severe health issues now and some of them are becoming the victims of depression and other mental ailments. With the onset of the day, even small kids and childrens can be seen Scrolling reels continuously, they are so addicted that they are unable to listen to their parents advice and suggestions. However, reels and short videos are good for online enthusiasts who wants to earn online but for students and kids it is just wastage of time and nothing else. Due to wastage of time on matching reels, the students are not able to concentrate on studies and thus their education also gets impacted. There was a time when children spent their time on outdoor games/activities, that is considered a brilliant workout for a sound body and mind. By playing outdoor games, the childrens remain physically fit and sound. But unfortunately these days the addiction to mobiles have taken toll on young generations and thus this affects their health and mind.
The reel and scrolling culture have also created a void among social relationships because people are so busy in scrolling and watching reels on mobile phones. They hardly get time to spend with their family members, relatives and friends. Staring at mobile screens for long periods reduces blinking, leading to dryness, irritation, and blurred vision. Continuously watching YouTube reels and videos makes children lethargic and inactive. They prefer to live alone in isolation and likes to watch reels in separate rooms which in the long run make them socially disconnected and mentally unstable. Youths are showing abnormal behaviour and they are becoming aggressive day by day. What is more depressing and distressing is that the even kids are so addicted with mobiles that their eyes are getting badly affected and it is to seen that by spending too much time on watching reels, there is overexposure on eyes and several recent reports reveal its harmful effects on eye health. Even it has come to limelight that psychiatrists and doctors have also raised concerns over the reel obsession and mobile addiction among kids and young generation. Further, watching reels for the whole day will make children less attentive, less confident and feel always confused. Staring at mobiles for long periods will negatively affect the eyes of children and there will dryness in their eyes. Less blinking in eyes will make their vision blurred and there will be irritation in their eyes due to overexposure. To cut a long story short, it can be said that the reel and scrolling culture have adversely affect our physical health, mental health and overall well-being. So due to overuse of mobiles and spending hours on reels have made our lives vulnerable to various health ailments.
The million dollar question is that how to tackle this grave concern of reel obsession. It is the duty and moral responsibility of every parent that they themselves should restrict their time utilization on mobile phones. Because kids copy things from their parents, if parents use their mobiles judiciously then their childrens will also stop using mobiles and restrict their time on watching reels. Though it may be difficult for parents but not impossible. It will take its time but results will be optimistic and positive. Further, in schools and colleges the teachers and educators must aware students of the disadvantages and ill effects of spending hours on watching YouTube reels, Instagram reels and other short videos on Internet. We as a society need to raise awareness and campaigns about the harmful and side effects of watching instagram reels, youtube short videos etc as scrolling these 30 seconds reels for long duration will hang the minds of kids and school going students. We all are aware of the fact that students are the future of our country, if their upbringing revolves around spending countless hours on watching unproductive youtube short videos, instagram reels etc then future of our country will be at risk. Over exposure to such stuff and content will weaken the students learning skills, their creativity, their ability to listen, think and focus. And ultimately will weaken the foundation on which our nation's progress and development depends. Is anybody listening is the million dollar question?
