The Rise of Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare:

Artificial intelligence has emerged as one of the most popular topics in recent years, but it is being harnessed with tremendous power in the area of healthcare. Families that once stared down the barrel of hereditary disease can now be equipped with information to prepare ahead of time and alter their behaviour which can improve their life expectancy.

Artificial intelligence has also served as a catalyst for personalized medicine. Rather than prescribing the same treatment for everyone and hoping that it works for them, doctors are now looking at AI systems which design therapies unique to each patient. One of the clearest examples is in cancer. Different cancers respond to treatment differently, largely due to the genetic mutations causing them. Artificial intelligence can analyze the genome of a tumor and make recommendations on the drug combinations that carry the best chance for a successful outcome. For patients, this means fewer cycles of ineffective treatment, fewer side effects, and increased hope for recovery. The same is now happening with mental health, autoimmune disorders, and chronic disease management. The promise of personalized medicine is now becoming a reality.

Improving Healthcare Access Through Virtual Assistants:

Artificial intelligence is also making healthcare easier to access via virtual assistive technology and chat-based applications. Many individuals, particularly in rural areas, have limited access to healthcare professionals, including specialist consultants. While this technology is no substitute for professional care, it serves as the first line of support and has already saved many lives by encouraging individuals to seek help sooner. If a patient has an anomaly and a health risk develops, the algorithms can communicate to the doctor as quickly as possible to intervene in some way. This aids not only in normal response to changing patient conditions, but it also enables us to monitor aging patients, needlessly frequently, or individuals with chronic health illness who require consistent care. We can do this tightly linked together, balancing how AI enhances human decision-making and care—technologists, clinicians, and governments moving forward as partners in making people's lives better and healthier. 

Human–Machine Partnership in Medical Care:

Artificial intelligence will make difficult and complex tasks simpler and easier without human involvement and without manpower difficult tasks can be done easy. What it will provide is assistance in managing tasks that are burdensome, mundane, or repetitive, to avoid human error; so we can allow human professionals to focus on what they do best—providing compassion, understanding, and empathy for the unique needs of patients. In our future of health care, we will build a partnership of humans and machines; humans and machines will operate together, playing to their respective strengths. For patients, this means faster diagnoses, better treatments and healthier lives. For doctors, this means more opportunity to listen, to comfort, and to heal.

The story of artificial intelligence in healthcare is by no means finished, but the story so far has already impacted millions of lives around the world. It is a story where technology is informed by human values, a story of innovation that aims to do more than just prolong life, but also to increase its value to society. As ongoing research efforts continue and AI becomes even more intelligent and ubiquitous, it holds tremendous power for humanity; at a time when the world seems completely divided by politics, economics, and ideology, the universal desire to be healthy is one of the few things that brings us together.
