Early Life and childhood days:
The ‘He Man of Cinema’, commonly referred to Dharmendra who passed away after a brief illness at the age of 89 years leaving behind a big legacy for Indian cinema and the nation. The, legendry actor Dharmendra who is called the "He -Man of cinema’’ or ‘’Bollywood’s He-Man’’ for his action-hero image and his career in Indian cinema. The Indian actor, producer, and politician was known for his versatility, starring in over 300 films across a six -decade career. He was celebrated for combining a strong on-screen persona with a romantic and comedic flair. Born Dharmendra Krishen Deol in India’s northern state of Punjab in 1935, he grew up in a farming family and moved to Mumbai in the late 1950’s, making his Bollywood debut in 1960. Over a career spanning six decades ,he acted in more than 300 films. In 2012, Dharmendra was awarded the Padma Bhushan, India’s third -largest civilian honour, in recognition of his contribution to Indian cinema especially Hindi films. He also briefly turned to politics, serving as BJP lawmaker in Parliament from 2004-2009, though his political stint was short-lived. Dharmendra is survived by his wife Heema Malini, children and grandchildren. Though most of his fame came from roles in which he embodied the archetype of a larger-than-life hero-upright, patriot and fearless-his charming performances in romantic hits equally made him popular with the masses. Character -driven roles, frequently portraying parental figures in the 1990’s and 2000’s in a career that continued through 2025. He was last seen in war biopic film "Ikkis’’ I have never thought I would come this far, ’’he said in 2021 interview with Indian news website Rediff. Dharmendra, one of the most enduring stars of India’s Bollywood cinema, has died at the age of 89. Born Dharam Singh Deol, but later known as Dharmendra ,he rose to fame in the 1960’s and became one of the most celebrated and popular stars of Indian cinema in a career that spanned six decades. Indi’s prime minister, Narendra Modi, was among those who paid tributes to Dharmendra after it was announced he died in his home in Mumbai on the morning of 24th November. Modi said his death marked the end of an era in Indian cinema.’’
Role and contribution to film industry:
He was an iconic film personality, a phenomenal actor who brought charm and depth to every role he played. The manner in which he played diverse roles struck a chord with countless people,’’ Modi said on X. Often called Bollywood’s "He-Man’’ in reference to his muscular physique, handsome looks and rugged charm, Dhrmendra was known for his versatility in roles that spanned genres ,from comedy and action to emotional dramas and later, a focus on character roles. He was particularly loved for his roles s in the 975 Indian western, Sholay, where he and another popular actor, Amitabh Bachchan, played a pair of lovable, small time criminals, in what is still one of Bollywood’s most beloved on-screen friendship. Dharmendra came from a simple, agrarian background. He was born in a village in rural Punjab and his father was a schoolteacher. His break into film came in 1960 when he won a film talent contest and went lone to Mumbai ,the heart of Indian cinema. With his oft-remarked good looks ,he soon established himself s the go-to romantic hero of Bollywood. He made his break with Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere in 1960, and was known to inspire fervour among his many devoted fans. Dharmendra starred in more than 300 films and also dabbled in politics, becoming an MP for the ruling BJP from 2004 to 2009. He continued to act throughout his term and was rarely seen in Parliament. His off-screen life was also a source of endless fascination and his family became something of a Bollywood dynasty. Dharmendra had four children with his first wife, Prakash Kaur, two of whom became Bollywood stars. But his electric on -screen chemistry with the actor Hema Malini resulted in his leaving kaur and marrying Malini in 1980. They had two daughters, one of whom also became an actress. Dharmendra got a highest civilian honour, in recognition of his contribution to Indian Cinema. He continued to act well into his late 80’s, even as his health began to decline. His final feature, IKKis, is due to be released in cinemas next month. Known to his legion of fans by his first name, Dharmendra acted in more than 300 films in a career spanning more than six decades. Often called Bollywood's "He-Man,’’ Dharmendra combined the old-school heroism of an action star with the tenderness of romantic lead, making him one of India’s most iconic actors. Born in Punjab province in 1935, Dharmendra won a talent show organised by film magazine, moving to Mumbai and acting in his first film in 1960. In the years that followed, he appeared in everything from arthouse films to soft romances, action films and goofy comedies, making him a top actor of his generation.
His notable films included Bollywood cult classic Sholay, in which he played one half of a team of small-time thugs tasked with catching a bandit. The film which was released in 1975 ,has become of Indian popular culture ,and Dharmendra’s dialogue from the film has influenced movies ever since. After starring alongside Hema Malini in several films ,he married her in 1980, without divorcing Kaur. He was a member of Indian Parliament from 2004 to 2009. Dharmendra was known for his warmth, humility, and iconic, screen presence. He enjoyed a fan base spanning all ages. His timeless charm crossed generations, and with his passing, he leaves a legacy treasured by fans, colleagues, and entire nation. Films like Phool Aur Patthar and Aaye Din Bahar ke made him one of the most sought-after actors of the 1960’s cementing his image as a leading man. He delivered countless memorable performances and became an enduring symbol of cinema. His death is big loss to not only Cinema but to the people as well.
