Cyber theft in digital age

With digital revolution and internet age which has many advantages for the society but the digitalisation and cyber age is not without pitfalls. Cyber theft and online frauds have invaded society and these are deceiving people and we should be cautious and alert so that we are not deceived by cyber stealing and internet fraud .Our bank accounts are prone to cyber frauds and cyber theft as online banking is not without pitfalls .People’s money in ATM’s is susceptible to online and digital fraud and therefore bank customers should be alert and cautious  all the time so that they are not deceived by hackers and cyber fraudists. Cybercrime is a broad term and it includes cyber theft as well. Cybercrime is any criminal activity that involves a computer, network or networked device. While most cybercriminals use cybercrimes to generate profit, some cybercrimes are carried out against computers or devices to directly damage or disable them. Others use computers or networks to spread malware, illegal information, images and other materials. Some cybercrimes do both that is target computers to infect them with a computer virus, which is then spread to other machines and sometimes entire networks. Cyber theft a pervasive form of cybercrime involves the illicit acquisition of personal or financial data through digital means, often with the intent to commit fraud or other malicious acts. It encompasses a range of activities, including identity theft, financial fraud, and data breaches, and can have devastating consequences for individuals and organisations. In modern day world, cyber fraud and online theft have made the lives of people miserable as people are deceived by the cyber frauds and online thefts and thus human beings have to face the challenge of cyber fraud and online thefts. People should be vigilant all the time and should be cautious and alert so as to save themselves from cyber thefts and cyber frauds.  Types of cyber thefts:

1. Identity theft - criminals steal personal information like names, addresses, social security numbers, and bank account details to impersonate victims for fraudulent purposes.

2. Financial Fraud - This involves stealing money or financial information such as credit card details to make unauthorised transactions or purchases. This type of cyber theft is common and people are be -frauded and their hard-earned money is stealed.

3. Data Breaches - hackers infiltrate systems to steal sensitive data including personal information, trade secrets,or intellectual property, often for ransom or resale on dark web. The cyber frauds and thefts adversely affect people.

Some of the main effects of cyber theft are as follows.

1. Financial Loss-Victims can suffer direct monetary losses through unauthorised transactions or fraud.

2. Reputational Damage - Businessmen can experience significant reputational damage due to data breaches and compromised customer trust.

3. Operational Disruptions - Cyber attacks can disrupt business operations ,leading to downtime ,lost productivity, and financial losses.

4 . Emotional Distress - Cyber crime can cause significant emotional distress and psychological harm, especially in cases of cyberstalking or identity theft.

5. National Security Concerns - Cyberattacks can target critical infrastructure .potentially disrupting essential services and posing risks to public safety. It has been rightly said that prevention is better than cure and it applies in the sphere of cyber frauds and theft. Prevention can be ensured by:

A. Strong Password—Use strong, unique passwords for all online transactions.

B. Two factor Authentication—Enable two-factor authentication for an extra layer of security. C-Software Updates---Keep all software and operating up to date to patch security vulnerabilities.

C. Antivirus and Firewall - Install and regularly update antivirus and firewall software.

D. Awareness and Training - Educate yourself and others about common cyber threats and how to identify phishing scams.--E. Data Encryption - Encrypt sensitive data to protect it from unauthorised access.

F. Regular Backups - Regularly backup important data to prevent data loss in case of an attack.

I. Incident Response Plan - Have a plan in place to respond to cyber incidents and minimize damage. It is important to combat cyber theft and it can be done by following:  1. Collaboration - Governments ,law enforcement agencies, and private organisations need to collaborate to share information and resources to combat cybercrime.

2.Cybersecurity Professionals - Invest in cybersecurity professionals and training to build robust defences against cyberattacks.

3. Legal Framework - Enact and enforce strong legal frameworks to prosecute cybercriminals and deter future attacks.

4. International Cooperation - Cybercrime is a global issue, requiring international cooperation and coordination to address the problem effectively.

Cyber theft is a growing menace that requires a multifaceted approach involving individuals, organisations, and governments to mitigate its impact and protect against future attacks. A primary effect of cybercrime is financial. Cybercrimes can include many different types of profit-driven criminal activity including ransomware attacks, email and internet fraud, and identity fraud, as well as attempts to steal financial, credit card or other payment card information. As, cybercriminals might target an individual’s private information or corporate data for theft and resale .It is especially important to protect backup data. The council of European Convention on cybercrime to which the US is a signatory defines cybercrime as a wide range of malicious activities including illegal interception of data, system interferences that compromise network integrity and availability and copyright infringements. The necessity of internet connectivity has enabled an increase in the volume and pace of cybercrime activities because criminals no longer need to be physically present when committing a crime. The internets speed, convenience, anonymity and lack of borders make computer -based variations of financial crimes –such as ransomware fraud and money laundering as well as crimes such as stalking and bullying -easier to carry out. Cybercriminal activity can be carried out by individuals or groups with relatively littler technical skill or by highly organised global criminal groups that could include skilled developers and others with relevant expertise. To further reduce the chances of detection and prosecution, cybercriminals often choose to operate in countries with weak or non-existent cybercrime laws. Cybercrime is a criminal activity that either targets or uses a computer a computer network or a networked device. Most cybercrime is committed by cybercriminals or hackers who want to make money. However, occasionally cybercrime aims at damage computers or networks for reasons other than profit. These could be political or personal. Cybercrime can be carried out by individuals or organisations. Some cybercriminals are organised use advanced techniques and highly technically skilled. Others are novice hackers. But we should be cautious ,careful, alert and vigilant and protect ourselves from cybercriminal attacks. In short cyber theft is a part of cybercrime and is included in it.
