Dr. Gwashlal Koul occupies a distinguished place in the medical history of Kashmir and is remembered for his pioneering role in bringing modern medical practice to the Valley. Born in 1900 in Srinagar, he achieved the remarkable distinction of becoming the first Kashmiri to obtain the prestigious MRCP (England). After returning to Kashmir with advanced medical training, he played an important role in strengthening and developing modern General Medicine at a time when organized healthcare was still taking shape.

Known for his clinical expertise, compassion, and humane approach, Dr. Koul believed in treating the patient as a whole. His emphasis on preventive care and nutrition, including his well-known “Kanz” prescription, reflected his broader understanding of health and well-being. His exceptional abilities earned him the honour of serving as Royal Physician to Maharaja Hari Singh, further reflecting the esteem in which he was held. Yet his legacy extended far beyond his medical accomplishments. He was admired for his intellectual curiosity, cultural sophistication, spiritual outlook, and dedication to lifelong learning. Dr. Gwashlal Koul’s life remains a remarkable chapter in Kashmir’s medical heritage - a story of knowledge, compassion, service, and excellence that continues to inspire generations.
