Late Shambhu Nath Pandit Advocate

A Distinguished Son of Kulgam and a Learned Family

Shambu Nath Pandit was born to Aftab Pandit & Rajrani, a Kashmiri Pandit family, at Kulgam. He belonged to a well-educated family, and all his brothers were well educated. His brother, Dr. Balji Nath Pandit, was a professor of Sanskrit at Degree College Anantnag, and he was also a scholar of Kashmiri Shaivism. Another brother of Shambu Nath Pandit was a reputed professor of English, and he also served as the principal of SP College Srinagar, and he was also head of the English Department of the University of Kashmir. Shambu Nath was a BA, LLB, and he was the first lawyer of the then Kulgam Tehsil, and throughout his life when he was hale and hearty, he practiced law, first in the Munsiff Court of Kulgam and then at the Court of Sub-Judge of Kulgam. 

A Pioneer Advocate and Champion of Justice

Throughout his distinguished career as an advocate, Shambu Nath Pandit remained steadfastly committed to probity, fairness, and professional integrity. He habitually advocated reconciliation, mediation, and amicable settlement rather than unnecessary litigation. Whenever a petitioner remained resolute in pursuing a suit before the court, he represented the case with scrupulous honesty and unwavering sincerity, in marked contrast to the increasingly adversarial and commercially driven practices often associated with the legal profession today. He earned the distinction of becoming the first President of the Bar Association of Kulgam.

Shambu Nath Pandit was a highly respected and influential personality in Kulgam Tehsil, commanding considerable esteem among people across the region. He was associated with the National Conference and maintained cordial relations with several prominent figures in its upper political echelons. Among his close friends and associates was Lieutenant Abdul Aziz Zargar of Manzgam, who subsequently served as a minister in the Congress government in Jammu and Kashmir. Shambu Nath Pandit also shared warm and cordial relations with D. P. Dhar, one of the prominent political figures of his era. His standing and personal credibility enabled him to exercise considerable influence within the political circles of contemporary Jammu and Kashmir.

Recognising his integrity, administrative acumen, and reputation for impartiality, Sheikh Abdullah appointed him Chairman of the Debt Reconciliation Board. He discharged this responsibility with diligence, discretion, and an acute sense of justice, earning respect for the conscientious manner in which he carried out the assignment. Another of his close associates was Habib Bullah Laway of Hanad Chawalgam, himself an advocate and junior to Shambu Nath Pandit in the legal profession. His professional agent was Lieutenant Shiv Ji Raina of H. C. Gam.

Shambu Nath Pandit was married to Smt. Tulsi Devi, the daughter of Lakshman Koul of Hanad Chawalgam, who was a patwari by profession and also possessed a modest landed estate. His wife's in-law was Smt. Boni Mall. Through his professional accomplishments, social stature, personal integrity, and extensive associations, Shambu Nath Pandit emerged as a prominent and widely respected figure in Kulgam Tehsil. He was blessed with four sons, all of whom received a sound and comprehensive education. His emphasis on learning and intellectual development bore remarkable fruit, as all four sons attained distinguished academic qualifications and subsequently occupied important positions in their respective spheres. His life thus reflected a rare confluence of professional rectitude, public service, social standing, and an enduring commitment to education and family advancement.

A Respected Personality with Strong Political and Social Ties

His eldest son, M.L. Pandit, had an MA in history, and he got a job as a teacher in the school education department. But he was not satisfied with the job and passed the test for the post of program executive in Radio Kashmir Srinagar and was appointed to the post, and by the dint of his hard work, he rose to the position of director general of All India Radio, and he also served Radio Ladakh, Radio Station Mathure, and Radio Station of Gurkpur, and he also served as the director of Door Darshan Jallender when militancy was at its peak in Punjab, and he talked about his duties with utmost diligence and honesty. His other son, namely Shri V.N. Pandit, had a doctorate in economics, and he served as a professor of economics at the Delhi School of Economics at Delhi University, and he was a reputed economist and also served as the economic advisor to the government of Nepal. After his retirement from service, he was deeply associated with Satya Sai Baba, and he resided permanently at Puttaparti, and he was the vice chancellor of the university opened by the great guru. His third son, Dr. B.L. Pandit, was a professor and deputy director at NCERT Delhi. His fourth and younger son, Shri B.B. Pandit, passed the IAS allied services and retired as Deputy CAG of India. It shows that he has provided very good education to him. 

A Life of Simplicity, Honesty and Enduring Inspiration

At the fag end of his life, he suffered some chronic ailment in his stomach, and he was operated on at AIIMS Delhi, and he somewhat recovered and again started his practice as a Sub Judge Kulgam Court, Kulgam. But again he fell sick at the quarter of his son, M.L Pandita at Radio Kashmir colony at Ikrajpora near Jawahar Nagar Srinagar. He breathed last at Srinagar, and had he passed away at his native village, Kulgam, hundreds of people from all walks of life would have participated in his funeral procession. In his funeral procession at Srinagar, his close friend and associate Mr. Abdul Aziz Zargar was present. He will be remembered for his qualities of simplicity, honesty, discipline, punctuality, and hard work. He is a source of inspiration for many people in his home district, Kulgam. May God grant peace to his soul.
