Samad Mir was a great sufi saint and poet of repute of Kashmir. He was the mystic and poet of Kashmir of the 19th century and his name figures a top among poets and sufi saints of Kashmir. His name is taken by the people of Kashmir with reverence and respect. He has written his poetry in the mother tongue Kashmiri despite the fact that Persian was at its peak in those good olden days. His poetry being in Kashmiri was understood by the Kashmiris and this also made Samad Mir a very popular poet and saint. Samad Mir has an important place in Kashmiri literature and language as one of the finest sufi poets to whose credit goes the depth and dignity of Sufi poetry in Kashmiri language and verses. He lived a very simple life and was deeply immersed in the spiritual traditions of Kashmir and exhorted people to follow divine path and strive for self-realisation.
He was born in a humble family and did not have any formal education but still he possessed genius and excelled in mystic and sufi poetry and his innate genius made him an extra-ordinary poet and saint. His was a big contribution as he enriched Kashmiri literature with soulful poetry and at the same time carried forward the message of Sufism and mysticism in Kashmir. His poetry in fact is a quest for divine and ultimate truth and it delved on truth, love and spiritual realisation. One of the main contributions of Samad Mir was that he wrote in Kashmiri which was understood by the people of Kashmir and he wrote in Kashmiri at a time when Persian was considered the language of the elite and scholars. It goes to the credit of Samad Mir that he brought poetry and literature to the door of the ordinary people and so this poet deserved great commendation.His poetry carried the fragrance of the local soil and Kashmiri idioms as well as the spiritual traditions of the Kashmir which made him and his poetry popular.Samad Mir gave Kashmiri language new vibrancy by his poetry made it not only a medium of communication but also a form of mystical expression. His writing in the mother tongue Kashmiri ensured that Kashmiri language grow and flourish as a language of philosophy and religiosity. His poetry is based on sufism and its traditions.
Just like other sufi poets and saints of Kashmir such as Nund Rishi, Lal Ded, Wahab Khar his verses deal with the subject and themes of love, human shortcomings,and path to realisation of the supreme truth or God. He is unique in the sense that his poetry appeal both to mind and to heart.His aptness and skill to use metaphor and allegory is famous which gave his verses a tinge of pleasantness. His "Aknandun’’ is a long masnavi that shows the story of a Yogi’s spiritual journey.In Aknandun, the poet combined story telling tradition with spiritual philosophy so as to create one of the most significant works in Kashmiri literature. His Aknundun is viewed and read even in the present time and Kashmiris are attracted to the great masnavi. Aknundun is a household name in Kashmir even today and people take great pleasure in reading and hearing Aknundun and it really moves people’s heat and mind and tears roll down the eyes of people while hearing Aknndun. Besides,being a masterpiece,Aknundun is also a spiritual guide as it talks of renunciation, love, and truth as well as sufferings.
Samad Mir gave Kashmiri language its first epic which resonates with spiritual theme and meaning and it proved that Kashmiri language is capable of presenting big themes with grace.His poetry stands tall as it conveys the message of syncretism and communal harmony as Hiduism, Islam and Buddhism coexisted and flourished side by side and it is eloquently projected in the Samad Mir’s poetry. He absorbed the elements from all these traditions ,which gave his poetry universal appeal and recognition. More often than not he stressed the futility of the material life and emphasized love, compassion, and humality.
His poetry transcended the barriers of religion and community, addressing the human soul in its desire for the ultimate truth. The universal appeal of the Samad Mir’s poetry makes it relevant even in the modern times. It is also one of the main contributions of his poetry that he popularised kashmiri verse in the form of masnavi. Before his time there were valks and shruks but Samad Mir gave masnavi to Kashmiri language and literature and thus his poetry is famous even today. His expertness over rhythm and imagery made his poetry not only profound in thought but also pleasing to ear. The illiterate people in Kashmir who could not read and write, memorised his poetry orally and it made his poems very popular and famous. His poetry in fact entered the cultural memory of Kashmir. Samd Mir also bridged the gap between the oral and written traditrions. Considerable part of his poetry was transmitted orally and kashmiris' memorized it and passed it to the future generations and it kept the flame of the sufi traditions enunciated by this poet preserved and alive to this day. In short, Samad Mir’s contribution to Kashmiri literature is literary as well as spiritual.
